Log
In digital cinematography, 'log' refers to a colour space specifically designed to maximise the dynamic range captured by the camera's sensor. By representing a broader range of luminance values, it allows for greater flexibility in post-production grading. The outcome in this log format appears grey and desaturated, with an intentionally low contrast to retain details in both shadows and highlights.
Different camera manufacturers have their distinct versions of 'log', each tailored to the specifics of their sensors. For instance, S-log, often associated with Sony cameras, employs an 'S' curve. When colourists in post-production apply a predetermined 'LUT' (Look-Up Table) or the inverse of the log curve to this footage, it brings the imagery closer to a natural, or manufacturer's intended appearance, suitable for broadcast or display.
