D.I.

A Digital Intermediate (D.I.) refers to the digital process bridging production and final output, allowing filmmakers to adjust the image digitally rather than photochemically.

In modern times, this term is still used when referring to the ‘finishing phase’ of the post-production process.

Typically occurring after editing and before final output, the D.I. process involves the digitisation of film footage (if shot on film) or working with the highest quality files (if shot digitally).

During this phase, colour grading and visual effects are often applied. The finalised D.I. is then used for generating distribution prints, broadcast formats, or other output mediums. It has become a standard process in the film industry, offering filmmakers greater creative control over the look and feel of their projects.
