Offline

‘Offline' editing refers to the initial phase of the editing process where a lower resolution or compressed version of the original footage is used to assemble the edit.

This allows for faster and more efficient editing, especially when dealing with large or high-resolution files. Once the edit is locked or finalized, the sequence is then 'conformed' or matched back to the original high-resolution footage in the 'online' editing phase, ensuring the final output is of the highest quality.
